Coastal Drive Thru Redwood Tree Limited Edition Print "Coastal Redwood, Drive Thru Tree"
$ 50. art size including mat 13"x17," has printed mat, as shown.

About this painting:
This pen and ink with watercolor is a dedication to all the drive thru trees that have saved countless old growth redwood trees by enhancing the tourism. It's a whimsical imaginary of a old-time veiw of a 1952 Chevy with passengers enjoying a day in the coastal redwoods.

In the 1930's the redwoods tourism industry devised a clever way to entice visitors to see the captivating beauty of the redwood forests - cut a tunnel through a redwood and charge people a fee to drive their cars through to the other side. It was a wonderful photo opportunity that quickly caught on. In time there were drive-thru trees, drive-on trees and walk-through trees. The new tourism protected many groves of ancient redwoods and helped other tourism businesses and lead to the state and national parks success.

About this painting:
This giant tree remnant is located in Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park on Crescent Meadow Road. It fell across the road back in 1937. A surveyor named Roy Devoe suggested carving a tunnel through it rather than cutting it up and hauling it away. The park superintendent approved the plan and to honor him the tree was called the Colonel Tunnel Tree.

The trees cave is 17 feet wide and 8 feet tall. A bypass near the tree allows much larger vehicles to avoid the tunnel. It has always been popular with the tourists and a great photo opportunity. All these various redwood attractions provide business for the parks protecting these ancient forests. This forest is the Sequoia Gigantium and the coastal redwood forests are Sequoia Semperviren, the tallest trees in the world.

Shrine Drive Thru Redwood Tree

Limited Edition Print "Shrine Drive-Thru Tree"
$ 50. art size including mat 13"x19," has printed mat, as shown.

About this Painting:
The Shrine Tree was the first major attraction on the Avenue. It is located at 13708 Avenue of the Giants in Myers Flat, off the 101 Hwy. It has been family-owned since 1958. When the road was an unpaved trail, horse drawn wagons would pull through the tree. In the 1920's Model T's were its next visitors.

Known worldwide as the Shrine of the Redwoods, the natural opening in the tree was created by fire centuries ago. It is large enough for full sized autos and pickups to drive through. This old giant is 21 ft. across and 64 ft. around. The Shrine tree is an estimated 3000 years old and some portions are still growing.

It was almost completely submerged under water, during the big flood in 1964! The white line above the trees opening notes the floods water line. Cabins were washed away and the ancient tree remained. It is a testimony to the fortitude of the redwoods and the people that reside there.

Kim Reid's painting shows a red jeep passing thru. More paintings to come!

$ 375. art size including white mat and black frame is 26"x14"

The limited edition print is also availabe for $ 50. art size including mat 13"x7" has printed mat, as shown.

About this painting:
The "Klamath Tour Thru Tree" is located in off the 101 Hwy on 169 Klamath Glen Road, State Route 169. That is 21 miles south of Crescent City.

Back in 1976 a retired US Air Force Major Harold Del Ponte hired his two nephews and a local tree faller to take instruction from a structural engineer in carving the 7.4 foot wide by 9.5 foot hole thru the tree. Mostly a 7 foot long chainsaw was used. Major Del Ponte offered his nephews $600. cash for their labor or part of the tour thru admission proceeds. The young men opted for the cash because they thought it would not become a viable tourist attraction.

The Tour Thru Tree has an estimated 60,000 vehicles a year driving thru it. Even though it might look cruel to the tree to cut such a large hole thru it, the tree looks healthy and continues to get taller every year. We need to remember these tourist attractions bring revenue to the forests continue to save their fellow old growth trees by keeping public interest in preservation.

Kim Reid's painting is a self-portrait in her Mini Cooper. More paintings to come!

About this painting:
"Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree" Is located in Underwood Park on Drive Thru Tree Road (CA-271N) in South Leggett off the US101. Chandelier Drive Thru Tree is 315 feet tall and 65.9 feet in circumference. Its estimated age is around 2400 years old.

This park is a Living Memorial to Charlie and Hazel Underwood, and has been operated by the Underwood Family since 1922. The park has a nice duck pond. Always nice to watch migrating ducks and geese that stop on their long journeys.

The tree was cut to enable cars to drive through it in 1937. The Chandelier Tree gets its name from the enormous branches on either side of the trunk. The branches are the size of small trees and begin about a hundred feet up the trunk.

A redwoods root system (4 to 6 feet deep) that spreads out for up to 250 feet from the base. These redwoods have no tap-root. Coastal redwoods (Sequoia Sempervirens), are limited to an area within 30 miles of the coast and range from Monterey to southern Oregon.
